Exploring the art of community A new nonprofit is breaking down barriers in Basel's art world

Audience members can expect to connect personally with her paintings, revisiting memories, homelands, or experiences. Purchasing a painting from Gudrun Sallaberger-Plakolb is adding a gem to your art collection.

How does Gudrun cultivate her life as an artist?

"For me, being an artist is freedom. My studio is full of light and when I work there I explore new frontiers. I am an explorer in all aspects of my life and this fact is very apparent in my art. Whether I am traveling, learning a language, or brushing paint on a canvas, I am always looking to discover something new. As an artist I am very curious. I love studying different techniques and I've tried many mediums, including screen-printing, pastels, and acrylic; but I always return to my love, which is oil painting.

Frontofbicycle Art Agency is very special; it has helped me connect with Basel and Switzerland and the art world here. Conversing with other artists and exhibiting is essential. I've been lucky to have many successful shows, but watching people's reactions when they view my paintings, and noticing if they are touched, is definitely the biggest prize. This is what I create for."

Frontofbicycle is a Basel-based nonprofit that connects artists with each other and with beautiful, available exhibition spaces. Amidst the city's renowned yet inaccessible art culture, it provides a much needed service and network for creatives in the region. Founded by Nicolette Youdim and supported by Megan Rodgers and Gudrun as Exhibition Coordinators, it is a trailblazing three-woman show. And measuring by its rapid growth, the concept is a success. Its cohort of resident artists has expanded from three to thirty-three in just over one year.

The eponymous image of the artist, riding a bicycle through an idyllic village with a basket full of brushes and supplies, captures the independent spirit of frontofbicycle. The upcoming April exhibition will showcase an exciting collection of paintings, sculptures, and photography at Galerie Katapult. This venue also has a social aim, to bring art appreciators together with high quality and affordable artwork.

Gudrun and thirteen other frontofbicycle resident artists will exhibit in the upcoming group show on 24-26 April 2015. Attend the vernissage on Friday 24 April to meet Gudrun and all of the excellent artists in person and to enjoy a refreshed sampling of Basel's creative outpouring.
