In 2012 the, the Volkshaus Basel undertook a complete renovation. The bar and brasserie were completely rebuilt and designed by Herzog & de Meuron. "Based on the original architecture of 1925, the Volkshaus was preserved in all its diversity and complexity and is reflecting the spirit of its own history," says Herzog & de Meuron Senior Partner Ascan Mergenthaler. "It was our intention to revitalize the diversity of this location which is so important to the life of Basel. At the same time we restored its architectural identity."
Along with the stunning new architecture, the new owners are concentrating on good, value-for money cuisine as well as friendly, efficient service. The aim is for guests to feel completely comfortable in the Volkshaus and find a Kleinbasel home-away-from home. The bar is open from 6.00 a.m. for the early risers and is offering a small menu of selected Volkshaus classics throughout the day alongside the daily menu. In the evening it transforms into a meeting place for the beer lovers, cocktail fans and wine connoisseurs.
The brasserie offers a selection of French and Swiss dishes, balancing the simple goodness of home-style cooking and fine dining. "We attract diverse groups with value for money and a terrific, lively atmosphere entices customers across the Rhine from the Greater Basel area," says Gilles Hoffer, Chef de Brasserie.
Through these recent renovations, the Volkshaus is living their dream of marrying cultural and musical events accompanied by affordable, home-style cooking- all under one roof.
The Volkshaus Basel is looking forward to welcome you in their premises.
