Welcome to ICS, an extraordinary international school and community that is a second home to globally mobile families living in and around Zurich.
Established in 1960, we are the international school of first choice for students aged 3 to 18.
We are the only school in Zurich offering the three main programmes of the International Baccalaureate (IB).
We are an inclusive school that enables all students to undertake the full IB Diploma.
An IB education is the preferred option for international families because it is transferable. Families moving on from ICS can easily transfer to other high caliber private schools in other countries or public schools in their home country. A continuity of learning, reassurance, certainty and stability for children is found with the IB Programme.
As well as offering the full IB Diploma to all students, ICS champions excellence in Sports and Arts and offers students a broad range of exciting extra-curricular opportunities alongside the academic IB programme.
ICS Educational Philosophy
The ICS Mission challenges all members of its community to achieve their individual potential, to pursue their passions, and to fulfil their responsibilities. ICS weaves those principles into the fabric of students' daily life.
"When I visit a classroom, I look for evidence of learning experiences designed to foster powerful connections, facilitate deep understanding, exemplify a culture of engagement, embody a global mind set and inspire creative thinking," says ICS Head of School Mary-Lyn Campbell.
The school's commitment to the development of the whole child teaches students to balance the academics with their responsibilities in the world on the one hand with their creative needs and personal expressions on the other.
Students are encouraged to maintain and develop their mother tongue language as this is important for their cultural identity and cognitive development. We recognise that having mother-tongue skills also helps students in learning additional languages.
Extraordinary Community Engagement
Responding to the needs of others by taking action and contributing to the local and global communities is at the core of ICS values. ICS instills a sense of community, culture of care and develops students' global citizenship skills through their involvement in numerous community service projects.
Students from every grade at ICS regularly come up with new ideas and activities that can contribute and make a difference both in their community and in the world.
Many alumni mention ICS's remarkable sense of community and culture of care among the highlights of their time at ICS. Those defining experiences of making connections, responding to those in need and reaching out both as an individual and as a member of a group stay with them for life.
Inspired by leading schools architect Jonathan Holland, ICS has renovated its campus to create user-friendly and flexible learning spaces. The classroom buildings have been re-modelled to create modern areas for students to work and relax, including large rooms for collaborative work.
The library offers countryside views filled with natural light and inviting cosy corners to read.
The ICS Visual Art Centre provides ample space for individual and group work, as well as all the art supplies and an on-site reference library. There is a research garden outside for students' horticultural experiments.
Modern Approach to Teaching Mathematics
The Secondary Math Department focuses on guiding students to become active learners of Mathematics by connecting ideas, discussing strategies, explaining methods and learning from mistakes they make. The ideas of ‘learning by doing' and ‘growth mindset' are essential for contemporary Math teaching.
One of the strategies used by ICS teachers is a "flipped classroom" method that shifts passive learning to home assignments. During lessons Teachers devote classroom time to practice, answering questions and providing individual feedback, thus both advancing students' mathematical capacities and allowing everyone to proceed at their own pace.
ICS has introduced mindfulness sessions into both Primary and Secondary curricula. Several trained mindfulness teachers guide students in using the techniques.
Mindfulness can empower learners to stay calm, focused, aware and creative, as well as building an emotionally resilient mind-set. It helps to focus academically and to combat stress and challenges that increase as students' progress through the grades.
Multifaceted Education and Abundant Opportunities for Success
ICS encourages commitment to the Arts, Sports and Service to the local and international communities.
Each year outstanding members of the graduating class are awarded a ‘Creativity Award,' ‘Action Award,' and ‘Service Award' in recognition of their top achievements in the Arts, Sports and Community involvement respectively.
In addition to academic knowledge, the school innovative practices infuse ICS students with insightful awareness of the world, well-earned confidence in their abilities, creative fire and profound personal connections that they will carry throughout their lives.
With vast natural and cultural resources, Switzerland is a perfect environment for "learning through doing." By deliberately structuring authentic learning experiences outside the classroom, we foster students' holistic development. Field trips are an integral part of learning at ICS, giving students the chance to apply their learning, broaden their horizons and develop leadership and independence.
We are conveniently located on a single campus, situated near the Zurich city centre and easily accessed by public transportation. We also offer a school bus service.
As an international school, we welcome students of all nationalities; we currently have students from over 40 countries here. We welcome applications from prospective students throughout the year. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
