Top 5 tips to learning any language Switzerland: a beautiful multilingual country

The beauty that comes with Switzerland sometimes becomes a little difficult to fully enjoy and experiences without the local language. But you can learn! Here are my five top tips to get you started:

1. Know your WHY and set a S.M.A.R.T goal

Before you start your learning journey, you should ask yourself: what do I want to learn? Please don't tell me you want to learn everything. I totally believe you should try to narrow it down as much as you can. What is your motivation, e.g. the purpose of your goal? What motivates you to learn? What is most important to you when it comes to learning German? What do you value? How can you personalize your learning around your values?

But, wait! Don't just set a goal, set a S.M.A.R.T. goal. S.M.A.R.T. stands for specific, measurable, action-orientated, realistic, time related. Your goal needs to have these characteristics; otherwise you will lose your motivation, setting yourself up for failure and never reach your goal. And you might be so demotivated that you throw in the towel and avoid learning the language completely.

2. Team up
Find a partner for your learning journey. With a partner you have a 50% higher chance to succeed and achieve your goal. Plus, you double the fun.

3. Make it part of your daily life
In order to learn a language, you need to use it as much as possible. Practice speaking German, French or Italian from day one, get used to using the language, even if it's only a greeting. Join a club to meet some locals. There are other little changes you can do to maximize your contact with the language: change your phone to the language you want to learn! You'll pick up some vocabulary without having to study it. Listen to the radio, get used to the sound of the language. Download the word of the day App to learn one new word every day.

4. Focus on what´s relevant to you
Learn expressions you need and can use immediately and put it to practice. This will keep you motivated and you'll notice your progress much faster.

5. Love your mistakes!
Learning a language is all about being brave and making mistakes. You learn to speak a language by speaking it! Mistakes are an important part of your learning journey because they´ll show you your progress. Embrace them!
