Interlaken, pure Switzerland Alpine nature on your doorstep

Winter in Interlaken – enjoy memorable moments amidst mountains and lakes

Wintertime sees the Interlaken holiday region transformed into an enchanting landscape of water, snow and ice.

Lake Thun and Lake Brienz vie to outsparkle each other in the winter sun, snow crystals glitter on ice-tipped fir branches and bizarre ice formations adorn idyllic mountain streams.

Picture-postcard villages in higher elevations and mountain peaks are wrapped in a blanket of snow. The meadows and forests of the untouched alpine landscape become a stunning winter wonderland.

Serenity is all around: all you can hear is the crunch of the snow beneath your snowshoes and your breath condensing in the crisp, clear air.

In Aeschi and Habkern, several well-signposted snowshoe trails invite you to explore the lovely wintry landscape.

Take in the fabulous vistas of the surrounding Alps from many different vantage points as you go.

Well-maintained cross-country skiing trails discreetly lace the tranquil winter scenery.

Get your heartrate pumping as you glide through the magical mountain landscape. In Aeschi you can even cross-country ski by night on a four-kilometre floodlit trail.

And by day, 30 kilometres of trails reach into the secluded Suldtal valley and back to Aeschi village.

The villages and towns on the shores of Lakes Thun and Brienz serve as an ideal base for trips to the nearby ski resorts.

Grab your skis or snowboard and hit the perfectly prepared slopes in and around the Interlaken holiday region.

The largest ski area is the adjacent Jungfrau Ski Region, which encompasses Grindelwald First, Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen and Mürren-Schilthorn.

This place lives and breathes ski racing tradition like no other. Here you can get your adrenaline rush by hurtling down the iconic, world-famous Lauberhorn run.

There's a free ski bus to transport you to and from the valley cableway stations. Your constant companions on your winter sports excursion are unparalleled views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peak trio.

Ensconced in eternal ice, the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe is a must-visit in winter too and well worth a trip in all seasons.

Do you prefer your ski resorts small but perfectly formed? The Interlaken holiday region has some charming gems you won't want to miss.

Take a cosy break with family and friends in Axalp above Brienz, Beatenberg or the Diemtigtal valley. All three areas have a great choice of slopes catering to all abilities. Stop for a breather now and then and bask in the winter sun on the terrace of a mountain guesthouse.

Habkern and Aeschiried beckon with ski pistes prepared with 100 percent natural snow, locally-run tow lifts and an intimate ambiance.

Fancy admiring the scenery from a completely different angle? Fairytale moments abound on the water.

Take a cruise on deep-blue Lake Thun, soak up the atmospheric setting and watch the snow-clad peaks reflect in the lake's surface as you glide silently across the water.

You can get even closer to nature by skimming over the mirror-flat surface under your own steam.

Is it even possible to kayak in winter? Of course!

There's a special treat in store at the lakeside in Bönigen: clad in a snug and warm thermal suit, you can venture out onto the turquoise waters of Lake Brienz accompanied by an experienced guide. The silence is magical, the only sound the strokes of your paddle. Kayaking through the breathtaking winter scenery is a balm for body and soul.

The roster of scenic attractions in the Interlaken holiday region is even more stunning when seen from above.

A paragliding flight under the winter sun is an unforgettable experience. Fly with your guide from Amisbühl to the Höhematte meadow in the centre of town. The air is crisp and the bird's-eye views simply sensational.

When dusk falls, thousands of lights twinkle along the shores of Lake Thun and Brienz. Both lakes are known for their picturesque villages with illuminated chalets and welcoming hotels.

Unwind in a charming spa hotel and enjoy moments of pure tranquillity after a day spent exploring. Stylish spa complexes with steaming brine baths and luxurious sauna facilities make for a soothing and pampering environment that facilitates total relaxation.

The Spa Nescens at the exquisite Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa

The Top of Europe Ice Magic arena offers an invigorating contrast to your spa experience.

Between mid-December and the end of February, the ultimate in ice-skating fun awaits you at the centre of Interlaken. Take a spin over the colourfully lit, winding ice runways or challenge your family or friends to a game of Bavarian curling.

Enjoy the ambiance in the cosy Winter Lounge – the scents of mulled wine, flammkuchen and traditional melted cheese on bread are guaranteed to set your mouth watering. Catering stalls with a wide range of food and drink ensure that no one goes hungry or thirsty.

Sledding by starlight is a highlight for night owls, snow lovers and incurable romantics alike.

On clear winter nights, lights like pearls on a string twinkle on the shores of tranquil Lake Thun far below.

Moonlight glistens on the water, bathing the surrounding peaks in a soft glow and setting the scene for the sled run from Mount Niederhorn to the middle station at Vorsass.

You can even combine your excursion with a tasty fondue and fortify yourself with Swiss cheese before you set off.

The descent has plenty of twists and turns and is an exhilarating experience by day or night, not to forget the magnificent panoramic views of the snow-encrusted peaks and the iconic "white giants" the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

Relaxing winter days in the Interlaken holiday region await. Explore natural diversity amidst mountains and lakes.

The myriad opportunities for leisure and recreation, countless excursion options and hidden natural gems at the heart of this ice, snow and water wonderland will ensure your stay is a truly memorable one.

It’s not unusual for a town to be on a river, lake or an ocean. But for it to sit between two lakes may well be unique. Interlaken - between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz - can boast such a privileged position. And there’s more. Interlaken is also in the heart of the magnificent Jungfrau region mountain world and affords views of the world-famous icy icons, the Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau.
