Waste disposal & recycling in Lucerne

The Swiss are efficient and conscientious about recycling and have a myriad of rules and regulations regarding the issue. Unsurprisingly, Switzerland tops world rankings for environmental action. Adapting to Switzerland's waste and recycling collection system requires time and effort but it is good for your conscience and for your wallet. Recycling collection points for most materials are widely available.

Garbage disposal in Lucerne

Garbage and recycling in the Canton of Lucerne is organised into four regions:



1. REAL: Recycling Entsorgung Abwasser Lucerne

  • Official REAL garbage bags (DE) must be purchased at supermarkets and used to dispose of your household trash.
  • Garbage bags, carton, green waste and paper are collected according to the calendar schedule (DE) from either the sidewalk in front of your house or neighbourhood collection points.
  • Paper and carton must be flattened and bundled neatly for pickup.
  • Bulky items require a sticker (sold in supermarkets) for every 5 kg.

2. GALL: Gemeindeverband für Abfallentsorgung Lucerne-Landschaft

  • Official stickers for garbage bags and bulky items are required. These are sold at over 270 locations.
  • General household garbage and larger items are collected on specified collection days (DE).
  • For green waste and paper pickup enquire with your local commune.  


3. GKRE: Gemeindeverband Kehrichtentsorgung Region Entlebuch

  • Check with your local commune for information regarding garbage bags, stickers and collection dates.


4. ERZO: Gemeindeverband Entsorgung Region Zofingen

  • Check with your local commune for information regarding garbage bags, stickers and collection dates.

Recycling in Lucerne

Glass, aluminium and plastic PET bottles need to be separated and then deposited at local recycling points. Glass items are further separated by colour. PET bottles can also be left at supermarket collection points.

Recycling collection containers for oil, clothing and metals are available in most neighbourhoods.

Larger items are collected with an official sticker. Items heavier than 25kg or larger than 1.5x05x0.5m must be delivered to the Ökihof.

The city's waste deposit centre is called Ökihof (DE). There are locations in Ebikon, Emmenbrücke and Horw.
