Explore Celerina, in the Upper Engadin region of Switzerland. You just may never come home after spending a week exploring the beautiful region.
Every corner is filled with beauty, from wide open panoramas and craggy alpine trails to sky blue lakes and mysterious glaciers. Whether you're looking for a mountain biking adventure, delicious regional specialties, or a quiet space to relax, you're sure to find it in Celerina, in the Upper Engadin.
In the center of it all, you'll find Hotel Chesa Rosatsch, a boutique hotel tucked away in the quiet village of Celerina, Graubunden, Switzerland, definitely worth a wander with your camera at the ready.
This town is a bit of a well-kept secret among the Swiss, who prefer its authentic charm, comfort and convenience to the glitz of neighboring Sankt Moritz busy with tourists. From Celerina's central location, you have easy access to the best of the Engadin and a wide variety of outdoor activities. Just a few blocks from the hotel, a cable car whisks you up to the Corviglia resort, with stunning alpine views, a mountain biking paradise, gorgeous hiking trails, and other amusements to make the most of your Swiss summer.
Explore beautiful Celerina, right at the doorstep of the Hotel Chesa Rosatsch
After a full day in the fresh mountain air, it's nice to settle into the cozy corners of Hotel Chesa Rosatsch and look forward to dinner at one of their three highly rated restaurants. With the friendly, social atmosphere and traditional details, it feels like coming home to visit old friends.
Hotel Chesa Rosatsch has a long history, full of colorful stories, with the oldest part of the hotel built almost 400 years ago. The original owners were three strange sisters, who were well known for their odd antics, like using their spinning wheel on the roof, as illustrated on a mural on the outside hotel walls. The current hotel is a seamless combination of four buildings, with the signature Engadin style and many original architectural details carefully preserved, the best of which can be admired from inside Restaurant Stüva Rosatsch.
Sleep in absolute comfort at the beautiful Hotel Chesa Rosatsch
Like the traditional buildings in town, each room at Hotel Chesa Rosatsch is slightly different in shape and styling, a nice contrast to the corporate uniformity of other hotels. Thanks to recent renovations, rooms are fitted with every modern comfort, with plenty of room to spread out over a longer stay. The warm pine wood of the furniture, walls and ceilings throughout the hotel imparts a wonderful aroma and a snug, homey feeling that draws you in. No wonder that Hotel Chesa Rosatsch is #1 on Trip Advisor for this area and that many guests return every summer to capture that feeling again and again.
Perfect for a gourmet lover
With three restaurants on site, Hotel Chesa Rosatsch has developed a well-deserved reputation as a "foodie" hotel, catering to a variety of tastes and styles, while still staying true to local food traditions. From the quiet outside, you might never guess its popularity, with many foodies around Switzerland coming here just for the food.
Restaurant Stüvas Rosatsch focuses on slow food cuisine, sourcing the majority of its ingredients from small regional producers. This philosophy finds its way even to the handmade dishes and cutlery, which are also produced by local artisans. The restaurant offers two multi-course menus, one designed around nose-to-tail eating, the other focused on seasonal produce and fish, though courses may be mixed and matched to your preferences. Wine lovers will be pleased with quality, fair pricing, and selection, with around 500 wines, many from Switzerland and small regional producers. In high season, make sure to book a table ahead so you don't miss out on this unique dining experience.
Are you a meat lover? There are also excellent veggie options
Meat is the specialty at Restorant Uondas, where beef, veal and lamb from regional producers are prepared by a local butcher, then dry-aged for weeks on-site, then cooked on the lava stone grill to perfection at the restaurant. Some enthusiasts reserve a few kilos of this special meat at the beginning of the season, enjoying a small portion of their "personal" cut each time they visit the restaurant. Restorant Uondas also boasts a wood-fired oven, turning out what some say is the best "Flammechueche" in all of Switzerland. You'll have to try it to find out. During fair weather, guests dine in the garden terrace along the river with mountain views, where the chef often uses the outdoor grill to prepare dishes like salmon on cedar planks.
Adults and children alike love ending the meal with the house made vanilla soft ice cream, with a well-guarded secret recipe. For a lighter option, the popular "Schoggi Bar" pairs a rich espresso with your choice of a selection of Läderach chocolate. The generous breakfast service includes lactose and gluten free options, which is increasingly important to many travelers.
The newest restaurant, Heimatli, offers more everyday fare with traditional regional dishes but with the same sensibility and care taken at the other restaurants. During a longer stay, you'll find plenty of variety to tempt your taste buds through your entire visit. Instead of half-board, the hotel offers a pre-paid dining card (which includes a 10% discount) that can be used all three restaurants.
Enjoy a beautiful day outdoors, especially if you're a mountain biker
The Upper Engadin is a magnet for mountain bikers, with 400 km of trails through the region, including three flow trails, many single track paths, and long distance mountain and valley routes. They also have a skills park to practice your braking, cornering, and obstacle navigation before hitting the slopes. Many of the bike routes, including the flow trails, are in the Corvilgia resort above Celerina, easily accessed with a cable car near the hotel or with a mountain train from neighboring Sankt Moritz.
For stays in the hotel of 2 days or more, you are entitled to the "Mountain Railways Included" all-inclusive summer pass, which includes mountain transport for you and your bike (and dogs!) for the entire region, as well as public transport in the valley. This free pass, quite rare in Switzerland, significantly reduces the cost of your holiday and simplifies your day to day planning.
Mountain bikers are well taken of at Hotel Chesa Rosatsch, which offers on-site mechanical service, wash service for bikes and clothing, a drying room for wet gear, and a secure bike room for storing equipment. They also have relationships with local sport shops, providing discounts on rentals and purchases.
Enjoy a cosy night in the Upper Engadin Valley
The summer is also full musical events including the Sankt Moritz Jazz Festival in July and the Celerina New Orleans Jazz Festival in August. In addition, each Wednesday evening, one of the Celerina hotels hosts a jazz band, welcoming people from all over town for a casual evening of entertainment. This summer, Hotel Chesa Rosatsch will be hosting bands twice in their lounge, where you'll often find guests socializing and swapping stories of their adventures during the day. In the adjacent InnBAR, you can enjoy their limited edition housebrand gin infused with rosemary and other indigenous botanicals or the house made barrel aged negroni. In this last smoking area in Celerina, you can also choose from a large selection of cuban cigars.
Whatever your wishes for this summer, the Upper Engadin is an ideal destination for enjoying the best that Switzerland has to offer.

I moved from San Francisco to Zürich, Switzerland in 2005 with my husband and then toddler son. Like any transition, it was tough at first, but the beautiful Swiss landscape made it much easier to love where I lived. It took us awhile to figure out how to enjoy hiking and traveling with kids, but now it's our favorite thing to do. I want my kids to love being outside and enjoy simple pleasures like picking wildflowers and throwing rocks in a river. So far it's working.
