Checklist

  • Decide on local or international schools
  • Enrol at school

Need to know

Local Schools

  • Admission will be assigned by the local education board based on your place of residence
  • Important: you do not choose the school and visits are not scheduled until enrolment is confirmed
  • Hello Switzerland tip: a commitment of at least two years is recommended for a foreign language child enrolling in a local school in order for them to fully benefit from their instruction in the new language
  • Attending a Swiss school should preferably not be chosen as a temporary solution, due to the effort required from both student and school to make it successful
  • Placement examinations may be given depending on the age of the student

Private and international schools

  • A visit to several schools in your requested area is strongly recommended before making a final decision
  • International and private schools offer excellent education, however each has its own individual personality and curriculum details
  • Early filing of your applications is highly recommended as the date the application is received will determine your place on the waiting list
  • Admissions are not examination based but placement examinations may be given on arrival

How to proceed

Local Schools

  • Class placement is based on birth date – this can vary by canton, please enquire locally
  • Birth certificate
  • Swiss residence permit
  • Proof of local residence (for example, a lease contract)
  • Health insurance certificate
  • Send the completed application forms and accompanying documents to the school secretary

Private and international schools

  • Application forms are available on the school website
  • Photo, passport copy, personal essay or picture, as stated on application form
  • Swiss residence permit is required; alternatively, student visas are possible for full time education

Expected timeframe

Local schools

  • Admissions can take place at any time during the school year. However, the best time is at the beginning of a term or with at least one month's notice to allow the school to organise teacher support
  • Extra support is available in language instruction during the first year or with a special grading scale

Private and international schools

  • There is no application deadline, however admissions for the start of the academic year in September will normally not be confirmed before March/April of that year
  • Mid-year admissions are based on availability and will normally be confirmed in the month prior to your arrival date
